LDS Mormon Garment Advertisements

How They Used To Do It

Garment Ads You're
Not Likely To
See Ever Again

Some time ago I came across these fascinating advertisements for LDS Mormon Garments.

What? You didn't know that LDS Mormon garments haven't always been an exclusive product of LDS-owned Beehive Clothing Mills, sold exclusively through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and only to temple-worthy patrons? (Cont'd)

The patterns used to be open and available for members and manufacturers alike. Gone are the days that you can purchase your garments from other reputable fabric stores. No more making the garments at home. No more adding the 'markings' after the fact.

I've covered a general history of the temple garments before, but it should be mentioned that before the LDS church built Beehive Clothing Mills in the 1930's, competition in the LDS garment manufacturing industry was stiff.

This 1915 advertisement for Mormon garments manufactured by the Utah Knitting Company promises the 'best grade of materials' and are superior in 'workmanship, fit, and finish.'

This 1922 Mormon garment advertisement offers 'L.D.S. Garments for Less Money.' I'm leaning more towards the 811's, extra heavy unbleached cotton for only $2.20. Sounds reasonable enough. After all, the 'Reliable L.D.S. Garments' company makes great Mormon underwear.

This 1927 LDS garment advertisement from the same manufacturer as above, 'The Reliable L.D.S. Garments' is really enticing. Don't forget that you can buy them in both the new or the old style. Read up on the history of mormon temple garments to learn why there was a new and old style.

This 1930 Mormon garment advertisement from the Salt Lake Knitting Store offers 'Beautiful and Durable' designs. If you want them marked, it's 15 cents extra. Be sure to say 'Old or New Style' when placing your order.

This Mormon garment advertisement from the Barton & Co. offers samples on request. Offers both the 'New or Old Style.'

This LDS garment advertisement offers a model '66' that promises durability through two full seasons. Cutler's offers both the 'new or old style.'

Another fine advertisement by 'The Reliable' company. Guaranteed 'L.D.S. GARMENTS FOR LESS MONEY.' Oh, and look at this; 'With every order of $8.00 or over, you get a Fine Rubber Apron FREE.' We're encouraged to order for our friends and neighbors if we're not in the market for some quality garments for ourselves. I think I'll check with Mr. Grover down the street to see if he'd like me to place an order for him. I really want that free apron.

And finally, another fine Salt Lake Knitting Store advertisement offering long and short legs and sleeves, with strings and buttons. Markings are 15 cents extra.
