To quote an Apostle of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints);
'Some things that are true are not very useful.'
(Boyd K. Packer, "The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," CES Symposium, 1981.)
This section of WhyMormons.net devotes itself to such factoids about the mainstream LDS Church and its history.
Apostle Harold B. Lee protested vigorously after learning that a BYU scholarship had been given to a 'negro student from Africa.' It would also be Harold B. Lee's single vote in 1969 that would impede blacks from receiving the priesthood until 1978.
Guys pray best: From 1967 until 1978 women were prohibited from praying in sacrament meeting.
Two times the fun: Mormons used to meet twice every Sunday for services. This was changed to a single 3 hour block in 1980.
The bills have to be paid: In 1981, after 11 years of losing advertising revenues, the LDS-owned Deseret News began publishing ads for R-rated movies.
Proper-like: In 1981, Apostle Boyd K. Packer instructed the BYU faculty that Mormon history, 'if not properly written or properly taught, may be a faith destroyer.' He admonished the faculty to only teach the positive and uplifting aspects of Mormon history so as to avoid negativity and controversy.
The Church of Jesus WHO? In March of 1982, in a televised sermon at BYU, Apostle Bruce R. McConkie denounced 'students and other Mormons who devote themselves to gaining a special personal relationship with Christ' calling them 'spiritually immature.' Where once a personal relationship with Jesus was emphasized in Mormon teachings, this began a reversing trend. Comparing two Gospel Principles editions, specifically Chapter 11 from 1997 and and that of 2009, one will note a curious change: 'All of the prophets since Christ have testified that He did come. All of us need to study the life of the Savior and follow Him faithfully throughout our lives.
Less converts and less missionaries: In 1982, the 'brethren' announced that they would change male missions from 24 months into just 18 months. This change was supposed to help increase the number of missionaries leaving to serve missions, and also increase the overall number of converts. Instead, the number of missionaries leaving to serve missions leveled off and new conversions dropped 7% each year.
An Uplifting Sacrament Service: On May 5,1985, LDS Astronaut Don Lind administered the sacrament in zero gravity at Skylab 3.
How long had it been? On October 2,1988, Michaelene P. Grassli, general Primary President, became the first woman to speak in general conference in 133 years.
Victim of sexual abuse? You may be responsible for it. Apostle Richard G. Scott told a General Conference that LDS women should avoid 'morbid probing into details of past acts, long buried and mercifully forgotten,' and that 'the Lord may prompt a victim to recognize a degree of responsibility for abuse.' Scott continues by admonishing victims to 'bury the past.' Later, the Salt Lake Tribune would report that suicide prevention lines became swamped with telephone calls by women in the days after Scott's remarks. (Richard G. Scott, “Healing the Tragic Scars of Abuse,” Ensign, May 1992, 31)
