To quote an Apostle of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints);
'Some things that are true are not very useful.'
(Boyd K. Packer, "The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," CES Symposium, 1981.)
This section of WhyMormons.net devotes itself to such factoids about the mainstream LDS Church and its history.
Fast offerings were established during the 'Great Hunger' in the winter of 1856-57. Since the 1830's, Mormons were asked to fast every Thursday without making any charitable contributions. By the winter of 1856, Mormons were asked to donate the food they saved as a result of the fasting to the Bishop for distribution to the poor. This eventually evolved into donating the money equal in value to two meals.
Men and women were seated separately at General Conferences in early Mormonism.
Of the church, but not in the church: The Relief Society - established by polygamous women - used to be a completely separate entity from the Mormon Church. It wasn't until the 1920's that the organization was invited to share facilities and administration with the LDS church.
Joseph Smith and Brigham Young both had 7 counselors in their presidencies.
Brigham serves jail time: The only time Brigham Young ever spent any time in jail was over a divorce to one of his wives in 1875, Ann Eliza Webb. Brigham refused to pay her alimony, so Judge McKean charged him with contempt and fined him $25 and to spend 24 hours in jail.
Prophet Orson Pratt? Prophet Orson Hyde? Nope. Two years before his death, Brigham Young readjusted the seniority in the Quorum of the Twelve because of the one-time excommunications of both Apostle Pratt and Apostle Hyde.
A popular Mormon hymn from 1872 reads: "Hail to Brigham Young, hail to Brigham Young, Praise him every tongue; and sing, God bless our Prophet, Priest and King, our Leader, Brigham Young." The hymnbook title page says that the hymnbook was 'sanctioned' by the authorities of the church, and distributed primarily for use by LDS choirs, Sabbath schools, and families.
Mormonism isn't controlling? "[T]he man whom God calls to dictate affairs in the building of his Zion has the right to dictate about everything connected with the building up of Zion, yes even to the ribbons the women wear; and any person who denies it is ignorant.' Brigham Young, February 3, 1867, JOD (Liverpool: B. Young, Jr., 1867 lithographed reprint of original edition, 1966), vol. 7, 19.
Popular Mormon Urban Myth: The horse-drawn hearse in front of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is the same hearse used in 1877 to carry Brigham Young's body from his funderal to his burial place. The Truth: Brigham Young died in the Lion house in 1877. His body was carried in a platform by clerks and employees from the Lion House to the Tabernacle for his funeral, and then again by the same folks to his burial place. Click here to learn more.
From the July 1993 Ensign article 'A Treasured Testament' by Apostle Russell Nelson: "Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man."
