LDS Mormon Facts 51-60

LDS Mormon Facts 51-60
Useful or not, they're still true.

Author: Curtis Weller

To quote an Apostle of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints);

'Some things that are true are not very useful.'
(Boyd K. Packer, "The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," CES Symposium, 1981.)

This section of WhyMormons.net devotes itself to such factoids about the mainstream LDS Church and its history.

The first temple designed for film rather than live presentation was the Bern Switzerland Temple.

The first pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley brought 7 dogs.

Easter is the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after March 21st.

Brigham Young used a divining rod to locate the site where the Salt Lake Temple stands. The divining rod once belonged to Oliver Cowdery.

What's in a name? The LDS church was originally named 'Church of Christ', just like hundreds of other 'restorationist' churches that sprang up shortly after 1800. It was later changed to 'Church of Jesus Christ', 'Church of God', 'Church of the Latter Day Saints', 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints', 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints', and finally 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints'.

Polygamy wasn't as exciting for Mormon women. The majority of plural wives, or women who practiced polygamy in the LDS religion, reported feelings of depression, despair, anxiety, helplessness, abandonment, anger, psychosomatic symptoms, and low self-esteem.

Eternal marriage? Brigham Young was divorced from 10 of more than 55 wives.

The idea of eternal or 'celestial marriage' was not original to Joseph Smith. It is likely that Smith adopted and developed the notion from both Erasmus Stone and Emanuel Swedenborg.

Joseph Smith originally said that it was 'Nephi' not 'Moroni' who visited him about the Gold Plates. He later changed his story.

The Mormon god's translation process: Joseph Smith translated the majority of the Book of Mormon by placing the peepstone he used for treasure hunting into a hat, and then placing his face into the hat.
