LDS Mormon Facts 71-80
Useful or not, they're still true.

Author: Curtis Weller

To quote an Apostle of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints);

'Some things that are true are not very useful.'
(Boyd K. Packer, "The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," CES Symposium, 1981.)

This section of WhyMormons.net devotes itself to such factoids about the mainstream LDS Church and its history.

Heber J. Grant was the first LDS leader with a diagnosed history of emotional illness.

What stopped and who didn't come?: At the Manti Temple dedication, Wilford Woodruff declared prophetically, 'We are not going to stop the practice of plural marriage until the Coming of the Son of Man.' The LDS church did stop the practice of polygamy, but Jesus has yet to return.

Fallen Prophet: Brigham Young preached to a special conference that Joseph Smith lost the spirit of God in the last days of his life. He had this discourse published as a pamphlet.

Who were you in a previous life?: Lorenzo Snow said that his sister, the late Eliza R. Snow Smith, was a firm believer in the principle of reincarnation and that she claimed to have received it from Joseph Smith, her [polygamous] husband. He said he saw nothing unreasonable in it, and could believe it, if it came from the Lord or His oracle.

White underwear: In 1893, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve decided that garments worn under clothing should be white. This is the first departure of the Utah temple garment from the contemporary 'Union Suit' which comes in various colors and upon which the Utah 'street garment' is based. Together Forever in Slavery: In 1894, Jane Elizabeth Manning, a black woman, was sealed as a slave for eternity to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Gabbing God-Theories: In April of 1895, Wilford Woodruff told a conference to 'Cease troubling yourselves about who God is, who Adam is, who Christ is, who Jehova is. For Heaven's sake, let these things alone.' Wilford found this necessary to help clean up Brigham Young's legacy of preaching that Adam is God.

Apostle James E. Talmage smoked tobacco to help with his insomnia. This was done at the request of the First Presidency.

An apostle abusing drugs: In August of 1896, Apostle Moses Thatcher began treatment for drug abuse. He was addicted to opium and morphine. The First Presidency tolerated the drug abuse for some time, but eventually released him from the Quorum of the Twelve for 'political insubordination.'

Who's your daddy?: Lorenzo Snow was 82 years old when his youngest plural wife gave birth to their last child. This makes Lorenzo the oldest General Authority to ever father a child.
