To quote an Apostle of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints);
'Some things that are true are not very useful.'
(Boyd K. Packer, "The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," CES Symposium, 1981.)
This section of WhyMormons.net devotes itself to such factoids about the mainstream LDS Church and its history.
Spiritual supplement?: Starting in 1891 and lasting for 50 years, the LDS church leased its commercial property on Commercial Street, now Regent Street, to whore houses.
Beer for the belly: On July 11, 1901, the First Presidency and Apostles released an official statement that Danish beer is not harmful or in violation of the Word of Wisdom.
Kissing Cousins: In November of 1901, the First Presidency released an official statement declaring that there is not any rule in the church forbidding cousins to intermarry and that first cousins can have temple marriages if they present a civil license.
Finished the mission with a bang: On February 20, 1904, the first LDS missionary committed suicide by shooting himself on the way back to Utah.
Under oath and from the prophet's mouth: On Mar 2,1904, 'Prophet, Seer, and Revelator', Joseph F. Smith, confessed before a committee of the U.S. Senate under oath, 'I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations. I never said that I had a revelation except so far as God has shown me that so-called Mormonism is God's divine truth, that is all.'
General Authority B.H. Roberts, quite possibly the greatest intellectual and historian in LDS church history, entered rehab for addiction to alcohol in March of 1904. The Word of Wisdom was still very much a 'suggestion' at this point in LDS history.
His last living polyandrous wife dies: Joseph Smith's last plural wife, Mary Elizabeth Rollins (Lightner) (Smith) (Young), passed away in 1913. She had secretly married Joseph Smith while she was still married to and living with her non-Mormon husband.
LDS Temples were notified in 1927 to immediately omit from the secret endowment and the secret prayer circles 'all references to avenging the blood of the Prophets' as well as all references to 'retribution.'
Kissy Kissy! Up until 1927, temple patrons would sometimes 'kiss' after performing a proxy sealing in the temple, also known as performing a marriage ceremony for the dead.
No longer a suggestion: It wasn't until 1928 that the Word of Wisdom, a suggestion at the time but not a commandment, was campaigned strongly by Heber J. Grant to be strictly adhered to as though it were a direct commandment.
